Warbirds over Awatoto Feb 10th & 11th 2024
(Ryan Groves Aeromacchi & look down the flightline)
This was the fourth year we have taken Hangar One to the event (a big undertaking) and not possible with out the other club members who also make the annual pilgrimage (COVID put the kybosh on 2022). Model Flying Hawkes Bay for those who don’t know is probably one of the largest clubs in NZ hovering around the 100-membership mark. They have been operating off the Awatoto site a few mins south of Napier since 1994 courtesy of the Hawkes Bay regional Council. The club has endured several flood events and Cyclone Gabrielle which hit the region only a few days after the 2023 event, the devastation through Esk Valley on the drive into Napier is still very obvious. To get the field ready for this year’s event was a mammoth undertaking for the club having to deal with bureaucratic / regulatory and insurance delays, let alone the physical clean up and reinstatement. As usual with clubs it is always a small group of dedicated and vison driven individuals that get stuff done, MFHB is no exception and the energy expended by its fearless leader Marty Hughes and a dozen or, so stalwarts was evident on their happy but exhausted faces! The field was manicured to a beautiful finish, runway laid out, safety barriers and starting box all in place upon our arrival Friday afternoon prior. As I have never flown off the field before Doug very generously offered to take my little Aerostar 40 down so I would have something to have a roar around with and orientate myself with an unfamiliar field (those of you I have trained know the importance of those boring old circuits and precision touchdowns) this is where that muscle memory really pays dividends! Carl and I prepared the YAK for flight and finally the YAK took to the Hawkes Bay Skies on Friday evening much to the delight of those eagerly awaiting its appearance. The horizon is wall to wall nothing much with only the odd tree tucked away well out of harms way. A steady sea breeze from left to right is the usual direction in the afternoon and is very smooth to fly in. The model performed flawlessly, and it was great to finally have it ready for the event. Scotty burnt a couple of gallons of various fuels with his 500 and Carbon X Cub enjoying the wide-open spaces and aforementioned manicured surroundings. The Model Aviation Northland contingent had another great experience and enjoyed the flying, comradery and BBQ meat centric weekend! If want to find out for yourself what it is like to fly at one of these events I suggest putting together or dusting off a warbird and doing some prep work before the Waitangi weekend of 2025 rolls around, get amongst it!. (Mr YAK patiently waiting for a pilot!)
(Taking off for the first flight in the Hawkes Bay!)
(Final approach, great result, job done!)

Out of the Shed There has been a couple eciting engine purchases lately with one being Roto 85 FSi - 270° for the fitting into to a P-40 Warhawk that I am building. The Roto 85 FSi - 270° is a twin inline cylender, twin carbuator and a 270° camshaft to give that lumpy warbird engine sound.
Specifications The 270° crankshaft is used exclusively for Warbirds. The sound of this engine is enhanced by this specially designed crankshaft design specifically for use in WWII fighter aircraft.
The long awaited increase in engine power, by changing the camshaft timing, is also a big change. Another new feature is the use of two carburettors, which take care of separate cylinder filling.
