Hi All
Welcome to this newsletter edition of Roaring Runways with the goings-on of our Model Aviation Northland members' articles and other club correspondence.
The committee looked into creating a mowing roster which has now been created see below.
A reminder that the club camera will be changing and will be easier to use, watch this space as members will be informed when changes happen.

On the Field |
Travis is Model Aviation Noorthland's newest and upcoming Junior member, working his way to becoming a compantiant flyer under the expert tutelage of Grant P.
Travis has only had 5 Sundays of training and at our April club day, he successfully landed the club trainer.
Congratulations Travis, you will be flying solo before you know it.
Impromtu Anzac day Warbird Flyin |
Impromptu Anzac Day Flyin was only a small turnout but fun was had with flying all planes.
Club Day |
Club Day on Sunday was a calm and sunny day for the diehard pilots, Neil Moss had some new toys to fly as we watched him roar the skies, Grant P was on glide time and Travis and I were training.
Field Upgrades |
There are modifications on the move at the field, with levelling out the bumps and hollows on the top of the field. Also with that, we will be extending the runway at the right-hand end to cover over where the fertilizer box was and the left hand closer to the drop-down fence.
Digger works were meant to commence on Friday 26th but with an issue at Brynderwyn Hills, all available diggers were called in.
The robot mower has been decommissioned while the works are in progress, thus a mower roster has been created to keep the field flyable see below.
June: Doug Shearer, Chris Willemen & Andreas Gabler
July: George Plesky, Grant Shaw & Neal Moss
August: Greg McKenzie, Grant Plaisted & Martin Croucher
September: Harvey Schroyen, Mike Shaw & Carl Hanson
October: Stien Henderson, Scott Lea & Sven Williams
It will be the responsibility for the monthly mowing and weed eating of the field and the 3 persons for their month are to collaborate with each other and if you cannot do it in that month it will be your responsibility to find a replacement.
Note: the field mowing could be done 2 to 3 times over the month depending on grass growth.
Make sure the mower and petrol container are filled and ready for the next rostered members.
Any questions talk to the club captain.
John spraying the grass to make it easier to remove.

I always was fascinated by the Fokker Wulf FW190. One of my first foamies (besides the famous Trojan) was an FW 190 with a 1.2m wing span, retracts and even the iconic fan behind the prop.
Now by chance, I have seen a Seagull Models FW190 A5 kit available on a local Facebook group I could not resist and bought that from a guy in Nelson.
Now the next question was, what engine do I put in there? I had an MLD70 twin petrol on my shelf, which was the one that was earmarked for another build, but I’ll never get to that one, so the 70 twin it is. Actually, the plan is rated for 50cc, so let's see how she fits
The first thing I realised when I opened the box, the cowling was nice and wide and could house my engine, a big relief. The other thing I noticed. that does not look like a FW190 the cockpit are is far too round. So first step butcher the cockpit section. And put a pilot in, and some other accessories.
- With the engine mounted, the landing gear attached and some printed goodies, the first run was ready.
- I used a Ramoser Vario Prop, where I can set the pitch of the blades. I started with a pitch of 9” which was quite aggressive, and once reduced to 7.5” the engine was nicely loaded but the plane did not run away on the ground.
Another alteration was the air vents which are not in the original kit. Some Balsa scrap and plastic cards and black paint, and she looks much more like the original.
Even though I have a 1/3 bigger engine in the nose I need 1kg of lead Which I had to mount around the engine, to get as far forward as possible. I first had them in the cowling, but that is a bad idea, the final solution was then a tray attached to the engine.
The Avetek balancing stand is doing a great job for these bigger planes to get them dialled in easily, without breaking a finger.
Time for the first Maiden. The first flight went well and CG was perfect, the engine was running well, just the pilot …more practice. I stalled on landing and removed one landing gear.
Ready to go again.
Overall a good plane, Scale wise more of a standoff scale, but once the pilot gets better a nice flyer and heaps of power.
But that is a good opportunity to improve.
