Welcome to this newsletter edition of Roaring Runways with the goings-on of our Model Aviation Northland members' articles and other club correspondence.

Club Day was a spectacular outing with many flights had by all, It was great to see Don turn up and have delightful flights and rousing comments great to see you on top of your game mate.
It appears that some members need refreshing on the club rules, I have copied them from our rule book and added them to this newsletter.

Club Rules Reminder |
General Flying Rules
- These safety rules apply to the operation of Radio Control model aircraft being flown at locations used by Model Aviation Northland Inc.
- Most of these rules apply at other sites designated by the club with specific additions relating to each location.
- Full details of the regulations governing the operation of model aircraft in New Zealand can be found in Chapter 4 of the NZMAA member’s handbook.
- Pilots are to be current financial members of Model Aviation Northland Incorporated.
- Pilots are to be current financial members of the New Zealand Model Aeronautical Association.
- Pilots flying solo are to be holders of an NZMAA wings badge or proficiency certificate applicable to the model type being flown.
- Pilots flying without a wings badge or proficiency certificate must be under the direct supervision of the designated club instructor.
- All flying models must comply with NZMAA rules, and documentation must be available on request where necessary.
- Visiting pilots from other clubs, flying at the invitation of a Model Aviation Northland member, shall be permitted to fly as long as the requirements rules 2 to 5 above are met. Club members are restricted to inviting one flying visitor per day unless prior arrangements have been made with the committee.
- Flying alone at designated fields is not permitted when the gliding club is operating aircraft, each pilot is to be accompanied by an observer. The observer is to advise the pilot of anything that could affect their personal or model's safety or the safety of others. The observer should advise the whereabouts of other aircraft including full-sized aircraft, a clear landing strip and the intentions of the other pilots on the flight line etc.
- The pilot is to communicate with other pilots on the flight line and call intentions, for example, “clear for takeoff”, “low pass”, “touch and go”, “dead stick” etc.
- The radio frequency board is to be used at all times by all pilots attending the airfield. Frequencies must be NZMAA-approved channels only.
- You are to carry out a pre-flight check of your aircraft before flying, this is to include a range check.
- Aircraft are to be physically restrained during start-up and running.
- Avoid excessive fuel spills on the grass, carpet squares are to be used wherever possible.
- All aircraft engine noise should be within the NZMAA recommended limits, and lengthy engine run-ups in the pit area are to be avoided.
- Flying is prohibited behind the pilot line this includes the carpark area and the operational apron area in front of the clubrooms.
- A maximum of five aircraft are to be in operation at any one time.
- You are to stop taxiing before the pit area is reached.
- Site Specific Rules for Flying at The Karaka Road Flying Site
- General
- The runway is to be always considered active.
- MAN Ground operations should be limited to the immediate area around our mown strip and pit area.
- High visibility clothing should be worn whenever practical if on the runway.
- Only pilots and observers should be on the flight line.
- Pets and children should NOT be allowed to wander onto the runway at any time.
- People flying alone must have an active cellphone, it is also a requirement that the pilot has advised a third party of their time frame at the flying site.
- A qualified pilot is to accompany anyone flying who does not have a wings qualification.
- The use of an observer is highly recommended by all pilots
Incidents
- If there is any accident incident at the field the correct documentation is required to be filled
- out and the Club Captain must be notified.
- The following are examples of incidents to be reported.
- Harm or injury to any person in attendance at the site
- Significant model failure resulting in crash
- Any near miss involving a person, model or vehicle
